Mr. Ajay Singh has scripted one of the most remarkable turnaround stories of recent times. SpiceJet was on the verge of shutting down in December 2014, having cancelled hundreds of flights, when Mr Singh stepped in and gave it a new lease of life. From staring at imminent closure to achieving ten quarters of profit and a load factor of over 90% every month for 31 months in a row (a global aviation record), SpiceJet’s turnaround story under the leadership of Mr Ajay Singh, has been one which probably has no parallel in the aviation world today. Mr Singh is a first-generation entrepreneur and is regarded as the face of the Indian aviation industry. When it comes to serving the nation, Mr Singh has ensured that SpiceJet does not take Viability Gap Funding from the government to fulfil the Prime Minister’s nationalistic vision of strengthening Regional Connectivity under the UDAN scheme. Mr Singh’s optimism for this scheme can be gauged from the recent order of up to 50 Bombardier Q400, which came soon after the largest single order in Boeing’s history of up to 225 narrow and wide bodied aircrafts. The Bombardier order will help create the single largest regional fleet in the country giving impetus to the UDAN Scheme. Mr Singh coined BJP’s hugely popular 2014 campaign slogan ‘abki baar Modi Sarkar’ which means ‘Now is the time of the Modi Government’. This slogan helped the current Prime Minister win the election handsomely. Mr. Singh has a knack of turning around ailing businesses whether it was a grounded ModiLuft that he renamed and launched as SpiceJet or advising the government on revamping the loss-making Delhi Transport Corporation. He has time and again proved himself to be a turnaround specialist. Earlier he was Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Pramod Mahajan. Mr Singh revamped the national broadcaster Doordarshan. As OSD in the Telecom & IT Ministry he helped draft the National Telecom Policy and the Information Technology Act which revolutionised the sector. He has also been recently elected as the President of the Boxing Federation of India. Mr Ajay Singh is an alumnus of Delhi’s St. Columba’s school. He was awarded the Sword of Honour, the school’s highest award, presented to the student who excels in academics as well as sports and co-curricular activities. He holds a degree in engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, an MBA from Cornell University, USA and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from Law Faculty, University of Delhi.
