A graduate in Commerce with a Postgraduate degree in Business Administration, K. Shyam Sundar has over 34 years of experience in the airline industry, with extensive exposure in the areas of network planning, scheduling, pricing, distribution and revenue management. He started his career in 1983 as a Management Trainee with the erstwhile Indian Airlines, then served as Regional Sales Manager, Country Manager – UAE and Deputy GM – Market Planning where he was responsible for scheduling, network development and bilaterals. Following the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines, he was selected as GM Market Planning Division in the merged entity and in this capacity managed the integration of the networks the two carriers and the establishment of Air India’s hub at Delhi. He then moved to the role of GM Revenue Management at Air India before being appointed Executive Director – Commercial of the carrier in 2013. Mr. Shyam Sundar left Air India to take over as CEO, Air India Express in Mar-2014, a carrier with a fleet of 23 737-800s, mostly operating international flights on a low cost model between India and the Gulf and Southeast Asia. Last year the airline turned over more than USD500 million and carried around 3.5 million passengers. Mr. Shyam Sundar has led the turnaround of Air India Express, driving improvements in asset utilisation and employee productivity. Air India Express is poised to record its third consecutive year of net profitability in FY2018.
